The floor underneath

Set up to teach confidently.

Every yoga professional teaches in a moment where something could go wrong. Verified members teach knowing that moment is covered. The cover is the floor underneath every other thing you build.

A senior professional body with regulated cover

Choose your route

Where do you teach? Choose the cover that fits your location.

Insurance arrangements vary by region, our approach remains the same: professionally verified credentials, specialist cover, and trusted underwriters.

UK Professional Yoga Teacher · Deep dive

Insurance is the foundation your professional practice stands on.

A venue asks for proof of cover before confirming your booking. A student raises a complaint months after attending a class. A retreat organiser wants reassurance that you're professionally insured before working together. These situations are not unusual; they are part of modern professional teaching.

"We created YogaPros to help yoga professionals access insurance and professional support that genuinely reflects the realities of teaching today. Too often, teachers only discover gaps in their cover when they need support most. Our goal is to help members teach with greater clarity, confidence, and protection."
What's covered

Six million pounds of indemnity cover.

Explore the boxes below to learn more about the policy. The headline cover is important, but the details underneath is what truly matters when you need support.

£6M Professional & Public Liability · per claim
How it activates

Three steps. One direction.

Insurance does not activate until your qualifications are verified. The chain runs in one direction.

1

Build your Live CV

Upload your qualifications. Add your teaching style, experience, photos.

2

We verify

Every certificate is personally reviewed by the Compliance Team against our professional standards.

3

Insurance activates

Your £6M insurance cover becomes active, your insurance documents are issued, and you can begin teaching with cover in place.

Activation is a manual process. Please allow one business day for our team to review your details. Verification time depends on the qualification; straightforward credentials clear fastest.

What if?

Six scenarios. How the cover responds.

Click any card. The front is the situation. The back is what actually happens: who handles it, what the cover does, what timeline to expect.

Scenario 01 · Student injury

A student rolls their ankle in your Vinyasa class.

They let you know after class they are planning to see a physio. A few weeks later, you receive a letter from their solicitor, seeking reimbursement for the physio and compensation.

Tap to see the response →
How the policy responds

This is exactly the kind of situation Professional and Public Liability insurance is designed to support.

If you receive a complaint, solicitor's letter, or indication that a claim may be made:

  • Contact Balens as soon as possible and provide them with the details and any correspondence you have received.
  • Avoid responding directly to the solicitor or admitting liability before speaking with the insurer.
  • Balens will notify the underwriter and guide you through the next steps of the process.
  • If legal support is required under the policy, this will be coordinated for you.
  • Where a claim is covered under the policy terms, legal defence costs and any agreed settlement would normally be handled by the insurer.
  • There is no excess payable by you on liability claims under the policy.

Many incidents are resolved without court proceedings, particularly where early guidance and proper claims handling are in place.

← Back to scenario
Scenario 02 · Venue request

A new studio asks for proof of insurance before booking you.

They want a certificate showing cover is active, valid for the dates of the booking. They need it within 24 hours.

Tap to see the response →
How the policy responds

This is one of the most common moments where professional insurance becomes visible in real life.

A studio manager asks for proof of insurance before confirming your classes. Instead of scrambling to arrange cover, you already have the documentation ready to go.

  • Your insurance documents will arrive in your inbox once your membership is verified and activated.
  • Your document confirms your name, level of cover (£6M), policy dates, and the insurer details.
  • Most venues simply require a copy emailed across before your first class or contract begins.
  • If a venue requests additional wording or a venue-specific endorsement, Balens can usually arrange this quickly at a small cost.

For many teachers, having recognised professional insurance is part of what helps studios, gyms, retreat venues, and employers feel confident booking you in the first place.

← Back to scenario
Scenario 03 · Online claim

A claim from a student you taught on Zoom.

They bought a class pack last year, participated in the live yoga sessions from their home, and now allege a back injury from a posture cue you gave during the class.

Tap to see the response →
How the policy responds

Online teaching is treated in the same way as live, in-person teaching under the policy.

If a student raises a complaint or alleges they were injured during a Zoom class:

  • Contact Balens as soon as possible with the information you have, including the class date, student details, and the nature of the complaint.
  • Avoid admitting liability or attempting to resolve the matter formally before speaking with the insurer.
  • Any useful records, such as attendance logs, payment confirmations, class recordings, health declarations, or online waivers, may help support the handling of the matter.
  • If legal guidance is required under the policy, support can be arranged through the insurer and associated legal protection services.
  • Covered claims are handled subject to the policy terms, with the same £6M liability limit and no excess payable on liability claims.

As online teaching becomes a normal part of professional practice, it's important that your insurance reflects the realities of how and where you teach.

← Back to scenario
Scenario 04 · Retrospective incident

A claim arrives 18 months after a class you barely remember.

The student attended a 60-minute corporate session you taught at a tech company in early 2025. The complaint references something a colleague allegedly told them was your fault.

Tap to see the response →
How the policy responds

Sometimes complaints or claims arise months, or even years, after a class took place.

This is particularly common with corporate or event-based teaching, where you may no longer remember the session clearly. The policy operates on a claims-occurring basis, which means the important factor is whether you held appropriate cover at the time the class was taught.

If a claim or solicitor's letter arrives:

  • Contact Balens as soon as possible and provide any information you still have available.
  • Avoid contacting the student, employer, or corporate client to discuss liability before speaking with the insurer.
  • The insurer will assess the matter based on the available evidence and policy terms.
  • Any records you retain, such as invoices, booking confirmations, attendance records, consultation forms, emails, or class notes, may help support the handling of the claim.
  • Where applicable under the policy, legal defence support and associated costs can be coordinated through the underwriter and legal protection cover.

This is one of the reasons professional record-keeping matters, even for one-off workshops, corporate sessions, and event teaching.

← Back to scenario
Scenario 05 · Contract question

A studio sends you a 12-page contract you don't understand.

It includes indemnity clauses you can't parse and a non-compete that looks aggressive. They want it signed by next week.

Tap to see the response →
How the cover responds

The ARAG legal helpline is exactly for this.

  • Call the ARAG helpline on 0344 893 6911 (Mon–Fri 9am–5pm).
  • A solicitor reviews the indemnity and non-compete clauses with you, on the phone.
  • You get specific guidance on what to negotiate and what's worth walking away from.
  • If the situation escalates and a dispute develops, ARAG legal-expenses cover (up to £100,000) can fund formal advice.
  • Included in your membership. No per-call charge.
← Back to scenario
Scenario 06 · Teaching abroad

You're running a retreat in Portugal in three weeks.

The retreat venue has asked whether your insurance covers teaching there, or whether you need a separate local policy for the dates you're on the ground.

Tap to see the response →
How the policy responds

This is a common request from retreat venues, hotels, and international wellness spaces, particularly when teaching abroad.

  • Access your insurance documents from your email.
  • Your documents confirm your level of cover, policy dates, and insurer details, which most venues will request before approving your booking.
  • Teaching retreats and workshops abroad is generally covered within the scope of your insured activities, subject to the policy terms and territorial limits.
  • If the venue requests additional wording, confirmation of territorial cover, or a venue-specific endorsement, Balens can usually assist directly.
  • If your retreat includes accommodation, travel arrangements, catering, or operates as a package holiday, additional cover such as tour operator liability insurance may also be required.

This is why it's important to check the structure of your retreat well in advance, particularly when working internationally or organising experiences beyond teaching alone.

The questions members ask

Things teachers actually want to know.

Professional Liability & Malpractice Insurance helps protect you if someone claims you have been professionally negligent, have breached your professional duty or have caused injury or harm as a result of a treatment or advice provided. This will cover claims or allegations made against you during the course of running your Yoga and Meditation classes.

If a third party alleges that your professional actions caused them loss or harm, this insurance can:

  • Cover damages or compensation you are legally required to pay; and

  • Cover the legal costs and expenses of defending you against the claim.

Cover is always provided subject to the full policy terms and conditions.

Public Liability Insurance helps protect you if someone claims you have caused them injury or damaged their property in a way that is not directly linked to your professional treatment or advice.

For example, this part of the policy can respond if a third party (such as a client or visitor) alleges that, due to your negligence, they have suffered:

  • Accidental bodily injury (For example: Tripping over Yoga mats that you are waiting to put away)
  • Accidental damage to their property (For example: a person attends your yoga class and puts their glasses on a side table. During the session you accidentally knock them to the floor while moving your equipment, and the glasses are broken.

If you are found legally liable, this insurance can:

  • Cover damages or compensation you are legally required to pay; and
  • Cover the legal costs and expenses of defending you against the claim.

Cover is always subject to the full policy terms and conditions.

Products Liability insurance helps protect you if a product you sell or recommend as part of your business is defective and causes injury or harm to a third party or causes property damage. Liability could attach to you even if you are not responsible for manufacturing the product.

If you are found legally liable, this insurance can:

  • Cover damages or compensation you are legally required to pay; and

  • Cover the legal costs and expenses of defending you against the claim.

Cover is always subject to the full policy terms and conditions.

Commercial Legal Expenses cover is provided by ARAG plc and is included as standard as part of the insurance package arranged for YogaPros members.

  • Tax protection cover relating to a tax enquiry, an employer compliance dispute and/or a VAT dispute
  • Unlimited access to legal and tax helplines

The ARAG legal helpline is available Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm on 0344 893 6911.

Please note: Any claims or incidents that may be covered under this policy should be notified to Balens in the first instance.

The policy is mobile, which means you are covered to practise in line with your qualifications within the territorial limits of the policy.

This includes, for example:

  • Working from home
  • Teaching in studios
  • Working in gyms

If you are unsure whether a specific location falls within the territorial limits, please check your policy wording or contact Balens.

You are insured to practise Yoga and Meditation under the policy. This includes activities such as:

  • Pregnancy Yoga
  • Children’s Yoga
  • Yoga Therapy
  • Sup Yoga (please contact YogaPros as condition/endorsement applies)

Cover is always subject to you holding a suitable qualification for the techniques you are offering.

Some activities are not included under the master policy, for example:

  • Aerial Yoga
  • Other activities outside Yoga and Meditation. For example Massage or personal training.

If you require cover for these or other additional techniques, you will need to take out extra cover under the multi‑therapy policy.

Please contact YogaPros if you have any queries or would like more information about the multi‑therapy policy.

No. The policy is arranged on a ‘claims occurring’ basis. This means it will respond (subject to the standard terms and conditions) as long as the policy was in force at the time the incident occurred.

This means, you do not need to pay for ‘run‑off’ cover once you have stopped practising.

Yes. Provided you:

  • Had insurance in place at the time you carried out the session; and
  • The activities are covered under your current Balens policy,

the Balens policy includes retrospective cover. This means the policy can respond to past work, as long as you were not aware of any claim or incident before the Balens cover started.

The Combined Liabilities policy provides a limit of indemnity of £6,000,000 per member. This applies any one claim, with unlimited claims per year, except for the Products Liability section, which is in the aggregate.

If you wish to increase the limit of indemnity to £10,000,000, please contact Balens. An additional premium will apply, and we will need to know the reason for the requested increase.

The Commercial Legal Protection policy has a limit of indemnity of £100,000.

The policy is suitable for UK residents and covers temporary trips abroad, excluding the USA, Canada and their territories. There is no time limit to the number of days you can work abroad under the policy, but you must remain a UK resident.

This can include work such as classes at a UK forces base overseas, provided the base is regarded as UK territory.

Please note: Any offshore work (for example, on yachts or cruise ships) is on a referral-only basis, and you will need to contact Balens separately if this cover is required.

Yes. The policy covers live online/virtual classes worldwide, excluding the USA and Canada. You must comply with the Record Keeping conditions under the policy.

If you are selling access to pre‑recorded classes, this is treated as a product. These are covered under the policy within the territorial limits. If you need cover for selling these products to the USA or Canada please contact Balens.

Recorded promotional material (for example YouTube videos or Instagram posts) is covered as standard, provided that:

  • It is directly related to your qualifications
  • It is free of charge
  • The content is kept up to date in line with your training and best practice guidelines.
A studio I'd taught at for two years asked for proof of cover before renewing my booking. I downloaded the certificate from my dashboard, sent it across, and the booking was confirmed within an hour. That's just what the policy is for.

YogaPros
From the co-founder

Insurance is the floor. Everything else stands on it.

I've watched this profession go through three decades of growth and I've seen what happens when teachers are sold cover that doesn't fit what they teach. We built YogaPros so the cover would. £6M, nil excess, retroactive, online and abroad: that's the floor. Everything else we do, the directory, the recognition, the community, the career path, sits above it.
