Bruce Mackay · Co-founder, YogaPros

Forty-one days fasting in a Thai jungle. Built the world's most transparent yoga register.

Ayahuasca in Peru before the wave. Kambo in Costa Rica. Ashrams inside the lineage. Breath retention at seven. Intense Vipassana retreats. Five decades testing practice on himself — then a register that demands evidence from everyone else. That collision is the story, and he knows it.

The medicine traditions: ceremonial, abroad, lawful where practised — and never a recommendation.

The intro · reads aloud in fifteen seconds

“Bruce Mackay has practised yoga since childhood and taught it for more than two decades. In 2006 he co-founded what became YogaPros — the professional body behind ten thousand teachers in more than a hundred countries. He's also been a drummer since he was eleven.”

The four sides

The business side

Brands, created before the industry asked for them.

Six ventures across twenty-six years. Click a year to turn it over.

1999The Yoga ShopYoga, posted — before Amazon reached the mat

Online yoga retail before most of Britain shopped online. The supply side taught him the industry: what teachers actually used, and what they could afford.

2003Union Yoga CentreThe Edinburgh studio, with Brian Cooper

Europe's largest yoga studio at the time — international teachers brought to Scotland and the UK, and one of the UK's earliest teacher-training programmes.

Standards were slipping, and both founders could see it from their own training room. The American body said no — so they built Britain's own, not-for-profit.

The body · rebrand2016Yoga Alliance Professionals“Professional” enters the name

The rebrand that put “professional” into a British yoga body's name for the first time. The industry has borrowed the word ever since.

2017EkotexThe products brand, born out of The Yoga Shop

Born as The Yoga Shop closed — the products side reborn as an ethical yoga-equipment brand that still trades today.

The body · rebrand2025YogaProsThree names, one continuous body

The name catches up with what was built underneath — the register, the Live CV, insurance, accreditation with teeth. The standard never changed.

— and others besides.

The seeking came first

The Inner Search.

For understanding. For lightness. For what the old traditions call the Rainbow Body and the Diamond Mind. The practices below were the how; the search was the why — and it hasn't ended.

Bruce Mackay in a deep seated forward fold, duotone

Five decades of daily practice — begun as a boy, never stopped. The fold is the oldest habit he owns.

Yoga

Daily practice since childhood — the root the rest grew from.

A side bend in shallow water, duotone

Many long fasts — the longest forty-one days, in a Thai jungle. Deep tissue cleanses between, and a daily ice bath to this day. The log was kept.

Fasting and Ice Baths

Forty-one days the longest, in Thailand. Deep tissue cleanses between — and daily ice baths still.

Bruce Mackay beneath a temple sign

Repeated long silent retreats, sat inside the lineage — the discipline underneath everything else.

Vipassana

Long silences, sat again and again, inside the lineage.

A sweat lodge at blue hour — ember-heated stones before the dome

Stone heat and stillness. The lodge ceremonies, worked with traditional Hopi teachers who keep them.

Sweat lodges

The old purification ceremonies, with traditional Hopi teachers.

Ceremonial, abroad, lawful where practised — never a recommendation. His record, told plainly.

The three moves

Three problems he refused to accept.

Three plays that changed how the industry works. Each began as his conversation and ended as the pattern others follow.

01The transparency play

Anyone can teach. No regulation.

Full transparency: one open Live CV per teacher and a public accreditation record anyone can verify, from training to insurance. Regulation refused to exist, so the register built the sunlight instead.

Make teacher credentials transparent.

02The profession play

Teaching yoga is a profession. Nothing treats it like one.

The Four Pillars — Teaching · Business · Wellness & Mindset · Compliance & Safety — the road map that takes a qualification to a living career.

We built a Career & Growth path.

03The original move · 2006

The industry based experience on training hours.

From 2006, the register graded teaching, training and specialist hours accumulated after qualifying. Experience became the currency — and the industry has been catching up since.

We count what comes after graduation.

Bruce Mackay behind the kit on a dark stage
The creative side

Rhythm first, then design.

A drummer since eleven — five decades behind kits. A designer's eye on everything the body puts its name to.

The humanitarian side

The dogs choose him.

Podencos — Spain's cast-off hunting dogs. Rescued, adopted, and now the household's standing members.
