Does the insurance policy cover me to work with children?

Under the policy offered to members through Balens, you are covered to work with children in line with your training and qualifications.

Why This Matters

Teaching children (under 16s) involves safeguarding, consent, and record-keeping. Insurance cover and requirements can change based on the type of class you teach, the age range, and where you are based.

What This Means for You

You are covered to work with children in line with your training and qualifications. If your training includes working with children, this activity will be insured. Please be aware you may be asked to evidence your training and qualifications in the event of a claim.

For children under the age of 16, it is a policy requirement that you obtain written consent from a parent or guardian before providing any treatment or session.

You must also comply with the record keeping requirements under the policy. For full details, please refer to the policy wording, found here

Note, if you run dedicated children’s yoga or teens yoga classes, you must have:

  • a children’s (or teens) teacher training qualification that covers the age range you teach, or

  • children’s yoga modalities included in your original training.

Depending on student age, venue rules, and parent/guardian presence, you may need a DBS check (or similar).

What You Need to Do

  1. Check with your insurer: If anything about your setup changes (age range, format, venue, supervision), confirm cover directly with Balens.
  2. Determine your class type: Usual adult class with an under-16 attending, or a children’s/teens-specific class.

  3. Check your qualifications: For children’s/teens-specific classes, confirm you hold a relevant qualification covering the age range, or that your original training included children’s modalities.

  4. Follow consent requirements: Obtain written consent from a parent or guardian before providing any treatment or session.

  5. Follow record-keeping requirements.

  6. Check safeguarding requirements: Confirm if you need a DBS check based on venue rules and how you supervise students.
