Yoga teacher insurance questions, answered

What techniques am I insured to practice?
You are insured to practice Yoga and Meditation under the policy. This includes activities such as: Pregnancy Yoga, Children’s Yoga, Yoga Therapy, Chair Yoga, Sup Yoga (please contact YogaPros as condition/endorsement applies).
Cover is always subject to you holding a suitable qualification for the techniques you are offering. Please note that all teacher training courses must include a live assessment. If a member wishes to offer a new technique that was not part of their original training, they will need to be suitably qualified for that technique and declare this**.
If you want to teach a children’s yoga class you will need to have either covered this within your foundation teacher training course, or complete a dedicated children’s yoga teacher training course.
Some activities are not included under the master policy, for example: Aerial Yoga, Acro Yoga, Yogalates, gong baths or sound healing, and other activities outside Yoga and Meditation, for example massage, personal training or pilates. If you require cover for these or other additional techniques, you will need to take out extra cover under the multi‑therapy policy.
** you can declare any additional development training you have completed by uploading your training certificates via your live CV.
Multi-Therapies Insurance for YogaPros Members
If you already have YogaPros yoga and meditation insurance and want to extend your insurance to include other activities, you may be able to apply for the additional Therapies Insurance policy at a discounted member rate.
The additional policy is needed for activities such as Acro Yoga, Aerial Yoga and YogaLates, which are not included under the standard Yoga and Meditation policy because they are considered higher-risk activities. It can also cover other activities listed on the Therapies List, provided you hold a suitable qualification for each activity.
The annual premium is currently £44/year, in addition to the YogaPros membership with insurance. The premium is paid directly to Balens Ltd. To access the discounted rate, you must have active YogaPros membership and active YogaPros insurance. Some higher-risk activities may require an additional premium, and activities classified as Class 4 or above cannot be covered through the YogaPros therapies scheme.
You can apply using the application form. Balens will assess your application and will require evidence of suitable qualifications before cover can be confirmed. If you want to insure an activity that is not listed, contact Balens before relying on cover.
Please note that the Therapies Insurance policy does not renew automatically. Your renewal terms and premium will be confirmed by Balens, and renewal will remain conditional on renewing your YogaPros membership.
Can my client bring their baby or child to a yoga class?
Yes, but certain conditions apply: If the session is a specific parent‑and‑child class, you are expected to hold a suitable qualification for this type of class. If it is a standard yoga class and a parent wishes to bring their baby or child, the parent must understand that they remain fully responsible for their child/baby at all times during the session.
You should also complete a risk assessment before running any classes where babies or children are present.
Does the insurance policy cover me to work with pregnant people?
Yes. You are covered to work with pregnant people in line with your training and qualifications. If you are teaching a standard class and a pregnant person attends, you are expected to have been trained in any relevant contraindications.
If you are running specific ante‑natal or post‑natal yoga classes, you are expected to hold a suitable qualification for this work. This may be part of your main yoga qualification or a separate specialist qualification. Please note you may be asked to evidence your training and qualifications in the event of a claim.
Does my insurance policy insure me to work at or run retreats?
The policy covers you to work at a retreat in your capacity as a Yoga/Meditation teacher. However, there is no cover under this policy for running a retreat (for example taking bookings, organising travel or accommodation, or putting together the overall package).
This type of activity falls under Tour Operators Liability, which is specifically excluded under the Balens liability policy. Balens can arrange separate Tour Operators Liability cover if needed. Please contact Balens for more information. The price for this is given on an individual basis.
Do I need to hold a First Aid Certificate?
It is not a condition of the insurance policy that you hold a separate First Aid certificate. There is an extension in the policy wording that will extend cover for good Samaritan acts, where you are responding to an emergency situation.
If you have a valid first aid certificate, you can upload it to your LiveCV to show gyms and studios that you have a certification.
What records do I need to keep?
We would particularly draw your attention to the requirement for adequate record keeping. In the event of a claim, insurers will ask for:
- An account of what happened from the practitioner’s perspective
- The practitioner’s response to any allegations made
- Evidence of training, qualifications and membership
- Full copies of all treatment records
Please note, record keeping is a condition of your policy, you will be asked to provide copies of treatment records in the event of a claim or incident.
Where am I insured to teach/practice?
The policy is mobile, which means you are covered to practice in line with your qualifications within the territorial limits of the policy. This includes, for example: working from home, teaching in studios, working in gyms, working outside.
The policy does not provide cover for teaching in the USA or Canada. If you require cover to cover online clients in the USA and Canada, you can add an extension to the policy for a small admin fee by contacting Balens.
Nothing matches that yet. Try “retreats”, “records” or “online”.
